Driver’s Wild Ride Through Fauquier County Ends in Arrest

FAUQUIER, Va. – A Manassas man is behind bars after fleeing from law enforcement on Tuesday.

According to an emailed media release from VSP Sergeant Brent W. Coffey, the incident occurred February 25, 2025.

At approximately 2:15 p.m., a Mitsubishi SUV was traveling west on Interstate 66 when officers with the Blue Ridge Gang and Drug Task Force attempted to initiate a traffic stop near the 23-mile marker.

The violation was for improper registration. The driver of the Mitsubishi refused to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.  At times, the pursuit reached speeds of 100 miles per hour.

The Mitsubishi continued north onto Leeds Manor Road where the driver stopped and fled on foot. Law enforcement personnel quickly set up a perimeter. The driver was later located and taken into custody without incident.

Devante Rashad Payne was charged with eluding law enforcement, abduction, possession of schedule I/II narcotics, fleeing from law enforcement, driving revoked, and reckless driving.

Payne, 31, was also wanted out of Prince William County on two felony probation violations.

He was transported to the Fauquier Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.

There was an adult female passenger in the Mitsubishi during the pursuit. Payne refused to stop and let her exit the vehicle. She was not injured during the incident and was released without any charges.

Prince William County Police Department, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Manassas Park Police Department, Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Leesburg Police Department, and the Fairfax County Police Department assisted with the apprehension.
