MANASSAS, Va. — Two people were killed and a third was injured Wednesday morning in a shooting at a Manassas business.
The suspected gunman fled, leading to a police pursuit on Interstate 81 that ended when he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
Manassas City police received a report of a shooting at United Rentals, 9415 Wellington Road, at 7:11 a.m. Sept. 30.
Officers from the Manassas City Police Department and Prince William County Sheriff’s Office arrived about three minutes later and found three victims.
Police identified the two people who died as Ricky Lamot, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33.
A third victim remained hospitalized in stable condition.
Police identified the suspected shooter as Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, North Carolina, who authorities said was an employee of United Rentals.
Police said Grant fled before officers arrived, driving a silver Toyota Camry.
A motive remained unclear.
Investigators tracked Grant’s cellphone to Harrisonburg and provided the information to Virginia State Police.
At about 8:20 a.m., state police were notified that Grant was wanted in connection with the Manassas shooting and might be in Rockingham County.
A state trooper later spotted Grant’s vehicle traveling south on Interstate 81 near mile marker 235 in Augusta County.
Police said Grant pulled into the rest area near mile marker 232, where troopers attempted to stop him.
Grant got out of the vehicle, returned to it and continued south, prompting a pursuit.
Near mile marker 227, Grant pulled onto the shoulder, got out of the vehicle and pointed a firearm at his head, according to state police.
A Virginia State Police tactical team and negotiator responded.
At about 10:30 a.m., Grant suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
State police said troopers did not use force during the incident.
The shooting remains under investigation.
