ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. — Albemarle County police have charged a Maryland man following a report that a person using a dating app s*xually assaulted a victim, authorities said.
Police said the victim reported in September 2025 that the alleged assault occurred after a dating app user who identified himself as “Wayne Washington” traveled to the Charlottesville area to meet the victim and assist with the purchase of a vehicle.
Investigators later determined the name provided to the victim was fraudulent and identified the suspect as Shane R. Driscoll, 32, of Baltimore.
Driscoll was taken into custody last week on two felony charges.
Police said an Albemarle County grand jury indicted him December 1, 2025 on an additional felony charge.
The charges include r*pe, abduction with intent to defile and communicating a threat in writing, police said.
Driscoll is being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
Police asked anyone with information related to the case, or anyone who may have encountered Driscoll on a dating app using the name “Wayne Washington” or another alias, to contact Detective Ricci with the Albemarle County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 434-296-5807.
