
SPRINGFIELD, Va. — A 44-year-old man died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver Sunday night in Springfield, according to a Fairfax County Police Department media release.
Thomas Gum, who had no fixed address, was crossing Old Keene Mill Road near Backlick Road shortly before 8:20 p.m. Oct. 4 when he was struck by a white SUV traveling east in the right lane.
According to a preliminary investigation, Gum was crossing midblock, outside a marked crosswalk, when the vehicle struck him.
The driver fled without stopping.
Gum was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives with the department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit are working to identify the driver.

Investigators are examining whether speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.
