ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police is investigating a two-vehicle crash that killed a Dayton woman and seriously injured another driver Friday morning in Rockingham County.
The crash occurred around 8:15 a.m. Aug. 28, 2026 on Coopers Mountain Road.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 2006 Jeep Liberty was traveling north on Coopers Mountain Road when it crossed the center of the road and struck a southbound 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The driver of the Jeep Liberty, Danielle Smith, 28, of Dayton, suffered serious injuries and later died at a hospital.
An infant passenger in the Liberty did not appear to be injured but was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
