BROADWAY, Va. (AP) — The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper Field Office Officer-Involved Critical Incident Response Team is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting.
State police said the incident happened at approximately 12:33 p.m. February 10, 2026, at a business on West Lee Street.
Authorities said the subject was allegedly brandishing a knife at patrons inside of a convenience store and later at a responding officer.
Broadway Police Chief J.D. Weaver said the subject’s actions led the officer to use lethal force.
The deceased suspect was identified as Michael Hopkins Smith, 61.
The Town of Broadway Police Department requested the state police investigation.
The case remains active and ongoing.
Upon completion, the findings will be submitted to the Rockingham County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for review.
