Police said officers, along with Harrisonburg Fire Department and Harrisonburg Rescue Squad personnel, were dispatched to the intersection of Fourth Street and Stuart Street for a reported collision between a vehicle and an individual operating an electric foot scooter.
When officers arrived, they found the scooter operator unresponsive in the roadway.
Life-saving measures were attempted, but the individual, identified as John Berrett, 51, of Greenville, was later pronounced dead at Sentara RMH, police said.
Investigators determined the scooter was traveling east on Fourth Street when it failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the intersection, where it collided with a vehicle traveling north on Stuart Street.
The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and called 911.
