STAFFORD, Va. — A 65-year-old man was taken into custody after a standoff with a SWAT team October 8, 2025.
At about 7:11 p.m., Stafford County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies responded to a shots fired report on Belle Plains Road.
A caller reported hearing yelling and multiple gunshots coming from a residence, according to the SCSO.
When deputies arrived, they saw a man outside the home.
After announcing themselves, the man refused to comply with commands and ran back inside.
Out of caution, deputies established a perimeter and worked to gather additional information.
They identified the suspect as Gregory Pitts, a convicted felon.
Deputies issued further commands over a public address system, but Pitts refused to respond and was seen closing the home’s windows.
As the standoff continued, the SCSO
SWAT team was called to assist.
Negotiators used a communication device to contact Pitts, who ultimately surrendered without further incident.
Pitts was charged with reckless handling of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
He was held without bond at Rappahannock Regional Jail.
