
WAYNESBORO, Va. — A late-night welfare check led police to discover a fire, where officers pulled a woman to safety before felony warrants were issued.
According to a media release from the Waynesboro Police Department (WPD), the incident occurred September 3, 2025.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., officers responded to the 900 block of 4th Street for reports that a woman had threatened to set her residence on fire.
When police arrived, they observed flames inside the home.
Officers entered and located the resident, identified as Monica Smith, 40, and removed her for emergency medical treatment.
Because of her medical needs, Smith was not taken into custody at the scene.
However, investigators later obtained two felony warrants against her.
Smith is wanted for:
§18.2-83 — Making and communicating a threat to burn or damage a building, structure, or means of transportation.
§18.2-77 — Maliciously burning or destroying an occupied dwelling or manufactured home.
According to the WPD release, there is no further information available at this time.
