SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred Sunday, July 6, 2025, at 4:52 a.m. on Interstate 95 northbound at the 120-mile marker.
According to investigators, a 1997 Ford Club Wagon carrying 12 passengers was traveling in the right lane when it was sideswiped by a 2006 Nissan Sentra driving on the shoulder.
The collision forced both vehicles across all lanes of traffic before striking the left guardrail. The van then overturned in the median, ejecting two passengers.
One of the ejected passengers, Ramon Ordaz-Martinez, 21, of Wray, Ga., died at the scene.
In total, 13 people were inside the van — the driver and 12 passengers. Two sustained serious injuries, while seven others, including the driver, suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Sentra, Peter Anthony Diez, 35, of Fredericksburg, fled the scene but was later arrested. He has been charged with hit-and-run and drug possession.
The crash remains under investigation by state police.
According to online court records, Diez remains in custody and is due to appear in Spotsylvania General District Court on September 29.
