
STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a serious three-vehicle crash that happened on Saturday.
According to a media release from VSP Public Relations Officer Brent W. Coffey, the incident occurred on May 17, 2025.
At approximately 8:25 p.m., a 2007 Mazda Speed 3 was traveling north on I-95 at a high rate of speed.
Near the 132-mile marker, the Mazda attempted to pass between an unknown vehicle in the middle lane and a 2022 Hyundai Palisade in the left lane. The Mazda collided with the Hyundai, causing the Hyundai to overturn onto the guardrail.
The driver of the Mazda, Joseph T. Celich, 23, of Stafford, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the crash.
While Celich was lying in the roadway, a northbound 2017 Nissan Sentra was unable to avoid a collision and struck him. The Nissan then collided with the Mazda.
Celich suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment.
A passenger in the Mazda, a 24-year-old female from Fredericksburg, was also not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the crash. She sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Mary Washington Hospital.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 42-year-old male from Alexandria, suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mary Washington Hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt.
Passengers in the Hyundai—a 41-year-old female, a nine-year-old female, a seven-year-old male, and a three-year-old female, all suffered minor injuries. All were transported to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment. They were all wearing seatbelts or secured in proper child restraint devices.
The driver of the Nissan, a 17-year-old male, was not injured. He was wearing a seatbelt.
Charges are pending as the crash remains under investigation.
