RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) have announced the release of a new type of vehicle inspection sticker for 2025.
According to a media release from VSP Public Relations Coordinator Matthew Demlein, the new design was introduced to make the stickers difficult for counterfeiters to copy effectively.
Bright green in color, the new sticker (for inspections that will expire in 2026) includes a holographic state seal and the image of a dogwood tree flower.
The expiration month appears on a white background, and the expiration year is placed on top of the dogwood image.
For the first time, the sticker also includes two QR codes.
The larger QR code directs individuals to the VSP Safety Division webpage. The smaller code is for administrative purposes. The codes do not provide information about vehicles or owners to the general public.
“We want Virginians to have confidence that when they see an inspection sticker on a vehicle that the vehicle has been truly inspected by a qualified professional, and that vehicle is, in fact, safe to be out on the road,” said VSP Interim Superintendent Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Hanley. “These new features add an additional layer of security to ensure criminals are not circumventing the safety inspection system.”
Stickers expiring in 2027 will be blue. For 2028, they will be red. For 2029, they will be yellow.
VSP provide statewide law enforcement services and work in conjunction with local law enforcement and criminal justice agencies.
