STAFFORD, Va. — When a Warrenton man tried to convince police he was someone else, the ruse didn’t quite go as planned.
According to a media release from the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), the incident occurred January 22, 2025.
At approximately 11:12 p.m., a SCSO deputy responded to the Chatham Bridge for a report of a disabled vehicle in the middle of the road. The driver advised that the vehicle was possibly experiencing electrical issues.
When asked to provide his driver’s license, the man handed over the license of his twin brother. Officers clearly knew something was wrong when the photo didn’t match the man they were speaking to — because the twins were not identical.
Additional deputies arrived on-scene, and it was discovered that the driver had a revoked license due to a previous DUI. The subject insisted it wasn’t him.
Using law enforcement databases, a deputy was able to discover the phone number of the driver. When he called the number, the driver’s phone began to ring. Mystery solved.
Faced with this and other evidence, the man finally admitted to his identity and that he had claimed to be his brother in an attempt to avoid a “driving while revoked” charge.
Dylan Lynn Hamilton, 21, was charged with driving while revoked, unlawful name change, identity fraud to avoid arrest, and providing a false identity to law enforcement. He was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $1,500 secured bond.
